Basically all anyone in the office was talking about today was how to snag an ARC of Catching Fire, the sequel to The Hunger Games.

All the conversation was about when it would be available at BEA, and if it was ticketed, and who everyone knew who could get them a copy, and who was next to read it after that person. Whispered conversations all over the place. If you came across two people talking hurriedly in the hall, it was probably about Catching Fire.

One marketing person had already snagged one--and instead of staying up all night reading it so she could pass it on, like a sensible person would, she had only read about 20 pages. This fact made its way around the hallways, and she got some serious dirty looks.

Seriously, it's like Harry Potter 7 all over again. We all have to read it NOW. We have to have read it BY MONDAY or maybe we'll get spoiled omg.

Whereas at my office I keep talking about it and getting blank looks. I've got someone going tomorrow keeping an eye out for me, and I'm crossing my fingers that it'll be there when I go on Saturday (oh please oh please oh please).

Scholastic posted precise information on their blog. Giveaways (unsigned) at 10am on Friday and Saturday, and the ticketed signing on Friday. :)

I'm going in early for tickets for other things anyway so I'll try to pick up one for that. Otherwise, I'll be happy with an unsigned arc.

I was whining the other day that if only I'd never heard of ARCs, I'd still be content to read books after their release dates. :-)

Given all the hype over CATCHING FIRE, though, I'm thinking it's time to bury any hopes on that one, and focus on more productive things, like ways to beg, borrow, or steal ARCs of FIRE and THIS WORLD WE LIVE IN instead.

(Except I'm not supposed to whine about ARCs at all, actually, because I told myself if only I could get to read BLOODHOUND last January, I wouldn't need anything else ...)

I want your job.

No seriously. A job where you can get a dirty look for not reading a book? I am in joy at the idea. I get picked on by EVERYone for reading too fast! You're lucky!

(And yes, I realize there are probably problems with such a job, but I am still jealous!)

Did you manage to carve out some time on Sunday? I hope you're recovered enough from blintz warfare that you can make it and snag some swag.

Man, I'm so jealous of you guys going today. ALL the good signings are today. Neil Gaiman! Katherine Paterson! Chuck Klosterman! The Fine Lines lady from Jezebel! There is freaking no one I care to stalk tomorrow. Boooo! Note to self: next year, insist on going Friday.

omg, I burn with envy! My oldest just read "The Hunger Games" - we read the first few chapters aloud at bedtime and then he wanted to read ahead - he stayed up until 9AM reading it, then after 6 hours of sleep, spent the next day reading it in bed until he finished. Heh, it reminded me of me ;-)

Isn't it great? I love it when people get excited about books. And I love that I have multiple sources for CATCHING FIRE :)

I found The Hunger Games a couple of days ago and bought it because of this entry. Now that I finished it, I came looking for this entry again so I can say OMGWANT to the next book.
