Book Giveaway: Bones of Faerie
Mar. 1st, 2009 10:59 amIt's March 1, which means it's my birthday month! To celebrate, I want to give YOU something. Once a week, for the next four weeks, I am going to be giving away a signed copy of a book I love.
This week, I am giving away a book that was one of my most anticipated titles of 2009--a book that totally lived up to all my expectations and excitement.
Bones of Faerie by Janni Lee Simner

If you've been hanging around here for a while, you've probably heard me rave about this book. I reviewed it over here, but honestly, what's not to love about a Post-Apocalyptic YA Faerie Novel? (You can read Invasive Species, a short story that takes place in the same apocalypse, to give you a taste of what you have to look forward to.) And now you can have your very own copy, signed by the author (the fabulous, talented and wonderful
janni!)
So here's how to enter:
1. Comment here. If you don't have an LJ, please leave an email address in your comment so I can contact you if you win.
2. If you link to this giveaway somewhere in a public post or blog entry or message board, comment here with the link and you'll get another entry.
3. Review a teen or middle grade novel published in 2009 in a public post or blog entry (GoodReads, LibraryThing and other book-specific sites don't count!), and comment here with the link, for another entry.
I'll select a winner next Sunday, March 8. This giveaway is open to people with US mailing addresses only, sorry!
Good luck!

Date: 2009-03-06 05:05 pm (UTC)I loved the worldbuilding, and the little throw-away details like "he began seeing her face reflected in raindrops", and the Tigers prowling at night, and the mage who once spent years as a tree on the edge of the forest (♥ I am not sure why that image appealed to me so much, but it really did). And I enjoyed the characters, how even those of them who were first introduced as symbols (the Bastard, the Prince, the King) ended up as real people with emotional depth.
My one problem with the book was that I wished there could have been a bit more emotional depth to the character of the mother, as well - at least something beyond her simply being evil and wanting as much power as she could get, and not caring whom she destroyed to get it. I admit that I did like the role reversal of the mother being power-hungry and uncaring, and the fathers being the loving family-oriented parents, but still, I like my villains to have a bit more depth, and it bothered me a bit to have the mother be so one-dimensionally evil.
But given that the book is ultimately a fairy-tale, that's not a huge objection. :)
edited to hide spoilers. :)

Date: 2009-03-06 09:57 pm (UTC)To turn the font white, you should put before the part you want to turn white, and at the end. I thought it was a cool trick when I first learned it. :)
To be honest, I am not completely sure that it's the best solution to spoilers since it really does just turn the text white, not hide it in any other way. So, if you ever change the background color of your LJ, that text will suddenly become visible. (Or, hm, if someone is reading this post in their own style that doesn't have a white background, the text will also show up - I hadn't even thought of that before!) Still, it was the best I could come up with. :)
I wonder if there is a feature on LJ that lets you automatically change your text color to whatever the background color is, so that it would stay invisible forever... If there is, I don't know it.
I've never used LJ messaging, so I'm not really sure how it works... Is it like email, or like an instant messenger? We can take it to email, if you'd like. I'm at katyaz at katyaz dot net.
