penmageI'm pissed. Did I say pissed? Pissed is the wrong word. Try furious, roiling, boiling mad and angry, all at the same time. More people were killed this week. Twelvce people were murdered and scores more injured, many seriously, as they were walking back from prayer service in Hebron. But I'd like to call attention to a different attack of this week.
Revital Ohayon, aged 34, and her two sons, Matan, aged 5, and Noam, aged 4, were murdered in thier home this week. A Palestinian terrorist broke into thier home and murdered them, a mother and two small boys - the boys were hiding under thier blankets, trying to protect themselves, and they were shot dead.

Terrified residents at Kibbutz Metzer spent the night huddled in their homes, fearful the gunman was still among them. By daybreak Monday, Israeli security forces said the attacker had fled, apparently to the nearby West Bank.

A mother and her children. A father, mourning his family. And nothing changes, no one reacts. Where is the outrage? Where is the furious outcry from humanitarians all over the world, protesting the wanton murder of these people, these children.

Last April, when Palestinian gunmen broke into Kibbutz Adora and murdered five year old Danielle Shefi in her bed, one of Arafet's aide's excused the attack, claiming that the gunmen were simply "people defending thier homeland." Now, answer me this: how is the murder of five year old girls - of four and five year old boys - the defense of a homeland?
Why is the world not outraged? How can anyone - anyone? - hear about this, and not want to stand up, and shout out, and make themselves heard? How can any humane person be okay with this, and let this pass, and by inaction, stand by and let it happen again - and again - and again???
Every day, more people are killed. We don't feel it here - I don't feel it here as much, and I was there. But they are people, just like us, regular, modern people going about thier daily lives, and not half as foreign as you might think. They're all people, good people, bad people, decent people, people of all sorts and shapes and sizes, just like here. And through no fault of thier own, they are being massacred, killed, terrorized. Thier children - our children - as members of a world population - are being killed.
Where are the activists? Where are the protests? Where are the people who care about the sensless murder of children beyond saying "oh, that's too bad" as they read the paper at breakfast, and then forget about it?

Date: 2002-11-18 11:49 am (UTC)But I don't think we'll see inaction much longer. To be honest, I don't think the Israeli government is going to put up with this much longer. And Israel, truthfully, will have no problem anihilating those who attack them, because Israel has a strong, well-trained military. There will be more killing, and innocent people will die, too. However, in my opinion, Israel has the sovereign right to defend its people - I'm surprised they haven't already just said "to heck with the international outcry" and just eliminated the danger. The bid for peace has been tried, but because nothing has been agreed on, and the killings are still occuring, I would judge that to keep trying to create peace around a table will just result in more deaths. If I were Sharon, I'd take my country's interests in hand and make sure that there were no suicide bombers or snipers left to hurt my people. And we may see this happen before the year is out. I hope that it is so, because this just can't keep happening. Sharon needs to forget about "international opinion" and move to protect his people in the most agressive, definitive way possible. A way that leaves no doubt that Israel won't stand helplessly by while its people are needlessly slaughtered.

Date: 2002-11-19 02:23 am (UTC)If only I could beleive that. It's hard, though, when you see pictures in the paper of seven year old, babyfaced Palestinian boys holding toy grenades and M-16s and yelling "Death to Israel!"

Again, if only I could beleive that. The problem is, that despite the fact that we have one of the best militaries worldwide, Israel is humanitarian. Last time Israel took action and went into Palestinian villages, they were super-careful not to hurt civilians. Instead of just bombing the place, they went through the narrow streets in hand to hand combat, and thus were ambushed, and 23 of our boys, our soldiers were killed. These are soldiers who ran through the streets of the village they were occupying tossing spring water to the inhabitants in case thier water spply was cut off. And then, the UN claims there was a massacre, and sends in a fact finding mission. it's tricky, see. Israel is small, and she needs the countries of the world behind her. We can't piss them off too badly, or we're in trouble. So our people die and we can't react - because as soon as we do, the nations of the world jump up and scream about human rights violations and suchlike.
It's so messed up.
