As I walked to work today, I noticed a news team outside the 42nd Street Library, and a whole mess of people crowded 'round the doors. Upon walking further past, I saw a sign:

"First signed copies of
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
arrive at 11am today:
J. K. Rowling's gift to the people of New York."

Am I the only one who finds this funny?

I don't know that I find it funny. Curious, indeed. Maybe generous, maybe unfortunate. I don't blame Rowling for her actions; she's actually been quite sane, at least from what little I have heard, for someone who wakes up and finds herself a cultural icon. Maybe she's riding the wave while it lasts, and that includes bestowing copies of her latest book upon the people of New York.

If the book is a mess, the signed copies will be curiosities one day. If it's brilliant, they had better guard them!

She's very cool about all the fame. She's not jumping on the publicity bandwagon -- she turned down quite a few endorsements on the books.
