Israeli politics...I love Israeli politics.

So. The results are in, from the election, and Sharon's the Prime Minister, for now. The final breakup is:
Likud - 37
Labor-Meimad - 19
Shinui - 15
Shas - 11
National Union - 7
Meretz - 6
United Torah Judaism - 5
National Religious Party - 5
Am Echad - 4
Yisrael B'Aliyah - 2
Arab parties - 9

All I can say is...wow. It's going to be interesting to see what sort of government Sharon tries to put together. This article discusses some of the possibilities quite nicely.

Whatan interesting government. I highly doubt that Sharon will be able to persuade Mitzna to bring Avoda (Labor) into the government, which means no coalition, and means that he has to court Shinui, because Shinui's got a ridiculous amount of seats. This means that Shas won't be in the government, because, as they're right-wing, Shinui won't sit in a government with them. And if Sharon doesn't have Avoda, then he's going to need Shinui. Bah. That's not so good. And it's going to be very interesting to see a government without Shas in it - they've had so much power for so long.

I can see Sharon going for a nice centrist government, bringing in Ichud L'Umi (National Union), Yisrael B'aliyah (because everyone respects Sharansky), Am Echad (One Nation), and Mafdal (National Religious Party). And Shinui. Lots of Shinui.

Oh, and it should be noted that Alei Yarok (Green Leaf Party) and Zechuyot HaGever BaMishpacha viNahagei HaMoniot (The Abused Husband and Taxi Drivers Party) didn't get any seats at all. Oh, well. :snicker:

Wella. I'm looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.
