Even old New York was once New Amsterdam...

In Historiography today, Prof. Stenhouse was drawing a map, and indicacted Istanbul. I couldn't help it - I murmured "Constantinople?"

Across the room, two or three people started chuckling.

Istanbul heck, I frequently don't remember that the name was changed to Constantinople.

'"Constantinople," said Father Chantry-Pigg, who did not accept the Turkish conquest.

"Byzantium," said I, not accepting the Roman one.

I took three semesters of Islamic Empires/Ottoman History. Every single freaking time Prof. Broadbridge said "Istanbul," which was A LOT, I started humming to myself. Argh.

Why they changed it I can't say, people just liked it better that way.

(sorry, couldn't resist)
